It’s Style Versus Slovenliness And Slovenliness Is Winning

Can style and culture resist the onslaught of slovenliness? It certainly seems to be a pitched battle, at least in this country, where a bit of style and class is sometimes lost amid a sea of ripped jeans that hang down to the ground and tattoos on the small of the back that would make the Illustrated Man blush in shame.

Many fashion experts are at a loss to pinpoint when the move from a sense of style and culture began to turn into a headlong rush into dressing like somebody who grew up on a canal barge first occurred. But if smell is any indication, the loss of the ability to put on a bit of eau de parfum spray in order to avoid at least smelling like week-old fish seems to have completely deserted many people.

Of course, it’s always the case that one generation will tend to rebel against the traditions and norms of another generation, and this is especially true when it has to do with younger people, especially men. Most of them today wouldn’t be caught dead walking around with a men’s sport watch on their wrists, for example. For them, busily digging around playing pocket pool to pull out a cellular phone seems to be something that they really love to do.

Partly, this phenomenon is due to people wanting to show off their very stylish and relatively expensive electronic wonders that can not only help facilitate a conversation but also give the weather and the time in 27 million time zones and dimensions. But if one stops for a minute — verified on a wristwatch, naturally — one would realize that just looking at the watch face is far more convenient.

Women’s fashion has also suffered greatly at the hands of the attack of the slovenly hordes. Certainly, there are plenty of women who can still bring it, fashion-wise, when they want, but it’s also the case that — outside of a Paris fashion show — haute couture is quickly becoming a thing of the past. Just look at a pair of women’s brown boots, for example. Nowadays, some look like futuristic combat boots that would be worn by a Marine, sadly.

It would seem that the modern age has helped to drive much of this and that certain generations of people may be reacting to all of the technology that hits them from all sides in a way that almost requires them to dismiss timeless and classic style. This goes even for something as simple as a wristwatch, which is in a veritable Texas cage match with a cell phone for the right to tell a person what time of day it is.

In the ‘good old days, ‘ a watch was meant for one thing and a telephone for another and never did the twain meet. Does anybody even remember being able to pick up a phone and call for the time from a real live human being? The answer to that question probably is ‘no, ‘ and it will for sure be a historical curiosity when a watch is found on the wrist of a person traveling between Earth and Mars, sadly.
