Boxing World Shocked By Edwin Valero Wife Murder Suicide

Edwin Valero, former WBA Super Featherweight Champ and WBC Lightweight Champ was detained on suspicion of murdering his wife on Sunday, April 18. He was found later hanging by his own clothes, having committed suicide. He was only 28. The southpaw was a legend in the making and had yet to be defeated. All of his 27 wins were via knockout, and 19 in the first round.

Caracas the scene of tragedy

In the early morning hours of Sunday, April 18, Edwin Valero left his hotel room and told hotel security he had murdered his wife. Police entered the room and discovered the body of Jennifer Viera, aged 24, stabbed to death. After being arrested, Valero hung himself with his own sweat pants according to the Huffington Post. This is the third high profile death by unnatural causes of a former champion boxer in the last few years. Alexis Arguello was found dead in his home from a gunshot wound to the chest, and Arturo Gatti was found dead from strangulation. Gatti’s death was ruled a suicide, but a ruling on Arguello is still pending.

A troubled career with promise

Edwin Valero had no peer. Southpaws are few between, even fewer with his knockout power. All of his professional fights were knockout victories, and 19 of the 27 fights he had were over in the first round, breaking a record which had stood since 1905. He won his first 18 fights as a professional in that manner, becoming a popular sensation in professional boxing.

Injury marred his career

A motorcycle injury he sustained while not wearing a helmet nearly derailed his professional career before it started. He didn’t fight in the US between 2003 and 2009, as many state governing agencies wouldn’t license him to fight as a result of his injury. In 2009, he fought in Texas, winning the vacant WBC Lightweight title defeating Antonio Pitalua, by referee stoppage (TKO) in the second round. Pound for pound, he may not have had an equal.

Assault allegations

Twice, Valero had been alleged to have committed assault, but both times it was dismissed. In March of 2010, he was ordered to get six months of rehabilitation and counseling. No one knows what touched off the Edwin Valero wife murder suicide, and now no one ever will. Hopefully, his family and friends can find some measure of peace.
