Dressing Retro : A Short Guide For Men
Each decade has its hits and misses when it comes to style but some retro pieces from the past remain enduring classics. We’ve all seen photos, maybe our parents or photos of past eras, where some of the clothing causes much amusement but its true to say that many fashion trends do come back maybe in a more updated form that is suitable for the present day. However some pieces remain much sought after and can fetch a lot of money when they go up for sale on internet auction sites or in vintage clothes shops.
Two classic items of men’s retro fashion from the 1950s are the leather jacket and the classic Levis 501 jeans. The birth of Rock and Roll saw Elvis Presley wearing leather during this decade and leather jackets were also popularized by Marlon Brando in the film The Wild One. This classic ‘rebel’ look was also adopted by James Dean whose film Rebel Without A Cause saw the cast dressed in Levis 501s, although it is reported that Dean himself wore Lee jeans and a pair of his Lee jeans fetched $35,850 at auction in 2006. Teamed with a classic white tea and boots this is a look that still endures to this day.
Suiting for men became more fitted at the beginning of the 1960s as Mod Culture took hold and trousers, lapels, jackets and ties were all slimmed down for a sharp but casual look that still holds out in the style stakes today. The Beatnik’s style was also popular with the iconic look of a black turtleneck jumper under a blazer still going strong today. The latter part of this decade saw the hippie movement emerge however the velvet bell bottoms and ponchos of this trend are perhaps best left for when you attend a fancy dress party!
Most of the men’s clothing from the 1970s now gets recycled as fancy dress and this is often the decade that people say is best left alone when it comes to the fashions. However with the emergence of the Hip Hop music scene in the 1980s sportswear like tracksuits and trainers became popular with many of the styles from back then making a comeback in redesigned form for the modern day. Adidas produce trainers in many of their retro styles and the ubiquitous high top trainers of the 1980s recently made a full fashion comeback.
The early 1990s saw the continuation of Hip Hop fashion with Nike trainers overtaking Adidas in the cool stakes. Again these trainers from the past can fetch a lot of money when sold in vintage stores. Grunge fashion influenced by Seattle grunge rock band Nirvana was also making its mark on the fashion scene and saw men wearing plaid flannel shirts with ripped jeans, a look which still endures for aspiring rockers today.
