Large Earrings Can Harm Your Ears According To Doctors
Two years ago it was giant sunglasses – nowadays its supersized earrings. On catwalks and red carpets everywhere you can’t avoid seeing celebrities like Kate Beckinsale, Kate Winslett or Michelle Obama, sporting elaborate pairs of earrings that dangle far below the jawline.
Now doctors have decided to speak out about this growing trend, warning that whilst they make attractive women’s gifts, oversized earrings can cause permanent damage to your earlobes. The number of cases requiring serious cosmetic surgery to repair damaged ears has risen alarmingly of late. Apparently the ear lobe tissue is very delicate and can’t handle seven pounds of metal and jewels dangling off them! Who’d have thought it!
But this warning, despite garnering a lot of news coverage, isn’t going to change anything in the fashion world. I hardly think that the danger of maybe one day needing cosmetic surgery to fix your ear is going to put off the celebrity trend setters. Hollywood actresses and models are in and out of their plastic surgeon’s office on a monthly basis anyway. And it’s not like they are going to struggle with the surgery bill on this one. They will still show up on TV and in glossy magazines with supersized designer 7-inch drop chandeliers which weigh a ton, but look ‘glamorous’. And while they do, fashion conscious young women and girls are always going to follow suit and buy the high street equivalents.Frankly the notoriety from all this press is probably going to make them even more popular with young girls looking to make that rebellious fashion statement.
Perhaps even more worrying is the growing trend amongst goth-inclined teenagers, both male and female, to get into what’s known as “lobe stretching”. As the name implies, it involves actually setting out to stretch and distort your earlobes by squeezing bigger and bigger plugs and gauges into your piercing.By the end of it you are left with a large dangling circle of flesh hanging from your ears. Now I’m not trying to be a disapproving grandma on this – each to their own. What happens, though, if you grow out of the earlobe stretching scene in 10 years time? You’re left with permanently damaged and deformed ears and no means to reverse them!
My feeling is that all this is going to come back to haunt us as our generation grows up and takes stock.Might we one day be cringing with embarrassment at all the deformed earlobes and wondering why we ever went there? Will these monstrous ear adornments end up in the same fashion dustbin as neon leotards and mullets? Personally I’d rather look back and laugh at it MINUS the permanent scarring, thank you very much. If you want to buy me a present, I’d prefer some spa gift vouchers for one of those nice long spa days that will make me look beautiful the natural way.
